Choosing the Right Material for the Project
Bulk landscape and construction materials are not interchangeable. Gravel that works well for drainage may not compact tightly enough for a driveway base. Fill dirt may raise or reshape a site, but it does not provide the same finished surface as screened topsoil. Rip rap may control erosion, but it is not designed for ordinary grading or lawn preparation.The correct material depends on the purpose of the project, existing soil conditions, drainage, traffic, slope, finish requirements, equipment access, and the amount of material needed.

Bulk Material Basics
Understanding Landscape and Construction Materials
Bulk materials are generally selected based on how they behave after placement. Some materials compact into a dense structural layer. Others allow water to move through open spaces. Certain materials are used to raise grades or fill low areas, while others create a finished surface suitable for grass, landscaping, driveways, drainage, or erosion control.Material names can also vary by supplier, quarry, region, and source. The same general product category may contain different stone sizes, percentages of fines, moisture content, color, or soil composition.

Structural Materials
Structural materials are used to create stable bases, reinforce weak areas, support traffic, build pads, or establish grades. Crusher run, larger stone, chert, and compactable fill are common examples.02
Drainage Materials
Drainage materials help move, slow, redirect, or stabilize water. Clean stone, rip rap, ditch stone, and certain gravel sizes may be used around culverts, drains, outlets, and erosion-prone areas.03
Finish Materials
Finish materials create the visible or usable final surface. Examples include driveway gravel, screened topsoil, decorative rock, landscaping stone, and materials used for final grading.Material names do not tell the entire story
Two materials with similar names may perform differently depending on stone shape, size distribution, fines, moisture, source, and intended application. A material should be evaluated according to the project rather than its name alone.02

How to Choose the Right Material
The best material is determined by what the project needs to accomplish. Material beneath a driveway must support traffic and remain stable. Material around a drainage outlet must resist water movement. Soil used beneath sod or seed should support root growth and allow finish grading.Before ordering material, consider the project purpose, site condition, desired finish, required depth, drainage pattern, and whether the area must support vehicles, structures, landscaping, or concentrated runoff.

Define the Purpose
Determine whether the project involves structural fill, grading, driveway construction, drainage, erosion control, landscaping, lawn preparation, or a finished decorative surface.2
Evaluate Existing Conditions
Soft soil, wet clay, steep slopes, standing water, previous fill, buried organic material, and poor access may affect both material choice and installation.3

Dirt & Soil Materials
Fill Dirt, Topsoil, and Grading Materials
Dirt and soil products are selected according to whether the goal is structural filling, site shaping, drainage improvement, lawn preparation, planting, or final grading.Fill dirt and topsoil serve different purposes. Fill dirt is generally used beneath the finished surface to raise elevations, fill low areas, or establish rough grades. Topsoil is placed near the surface where vegetation, landscaping, seed, or sod will be installed.

Topsoil contains organic matter and is intended for the upper layer of a project. Deep fills, pads, driveways, and structural areas require materials selected and compacted for support rather than plant growth.05
Drainage & Erosion Control
Materials Used to Manage Water and Erosion
Drainage materials must do more than cover wet soil. The material should be selected according to water volume, flow speed, slope, outlet condition, soil stability, and whether the project includes a ditch, culvert, swale, drain, driveway, creek bank, or exposed slope.Clean Gravel

Logistics & Placement
Material Delivery and Precision Spreading
Ordering the correct material is only part of the project. The property must also be accessible to the delivery truck, and the material must be placed where it can be spread, graded, compacted, or installed efficiently.Material can be delivered in a pile for later use, tailgate spread along an accessible route, or placed as part of a larger grading, driveway, drainage, or site-preparation project.

Quantity Planning
Estimating How Much Material You Need
Material quantity is generally based on project length, width, depth, material density, compaction, settlement, and waste. Gravel and rock are often sold by weight, while dirt and soil may be discussed by cubic yard or truckload depending on the supplier and project.Small errors in planned depth can produce large differences in total quantity across a long driveway, pad, parking area, or grading project.
Basic Volume Formula
Length × Width × Depth = Volume
Project measurements should use compatible units. When dimensions are entered in feet, depth must also be converted from inches to feet before calculating cubic feet.Divide cubic feet by 27 to estimate cubic yards. Converting cubic yards to tons requires a material-specific density estimate.
